August is here, and we all know what that means...the end of Summer hours, casual dress codes, ice cream socials, sunny adventures… and the end of Summer. So it’s back to work, and back to school as the days grow colder and shorter. Naturally that all sounds pretty depressing; however, this year, I am actually not heartbroken over the Summer ending. This autumn and this upcoming school year mark the moment I have been subconsciously waiting for my entire life...becoming a true New Yorker. Although I have lived in New York for practically my entire life, I have spent most of my time in the suburbs across the river, AKA “upstate.” For those of you who do not know, there is a stark contrast between growing up in the suburbs and growing up in the city. I remember being barely nine years old, and skipping down the streets of Manhattan in my little pair of heels, boot-cut jeans, and shearling sweater alongside my father on one of our weekly visits to the “big city.” He bent over and told me, “You’re going to make a great New Yorker someday.” I believe that someday is today. I am giving New York a chance and New York is giving me a chance to start over and make my mark.
